St Jude’s Reinvention is Complete
After a 2014 fire almost destroyed Howard Raggatt’s parish church, ARM went much further than restoring it.
We worked with the congregation to reimagine the 1860s St Jude’s Anglican Church, Carlton for the 21st Century.
We added a new atrium structure between the existing heritage church and the hall buildings. It is much-needed space for the expanding parish, and it addresses accessibility standards that didn’t exist in the 1860s.
The traditional tea-and-biscuits spread after church wasn’t very Carlton. So St Jude’s now has a café with a view to cosmopolitan Lygon Street.
Its canopy references Ron Robertson-Swann’s controversial yellow sculpture Vault (1978), which has long fascinated Howard. Except this time, it’s not yellow.
