Adelaide Railway Station wins!

Adelaide Railway Station has won the City of Adelaide Prize, the People’s Choice Award and the AIA Commendation in Australian Institute of Architecture 2022 Awards.

The Adelaide Railway Station Entry Concourse project delivers a generous pedestrian concourse connecting the Adelaide Railway to the Riverbank. It has been the first completed element of ARM’s wide ranging Festival Plaza Design within the Riverbank Masterplan. The station concourse interior was conceived as an organic vaulted arcade, a carved interior space, inspired by the Garlick and Jackman Neoclassical interior of the original Adelaide Railway Station Hall. The vaults were sculpted organically, but also pushed and pulled to integrate with the structural columns that hold up the SkyCity building above. This allowed the arches to touch down to ground around each column, resulting in a rhythm of intersecting vaults and an immersive experiential collection of volumes.

The design recognises form as function as space, connecting the city, through the station to the Riverbank. It is architecture as sculpture, creating spaces that transform a previously forgotten part of the Riverbank, creating, we believe, a new sense of pride in place for Adelaide.

“An evocative urban plaza has been crowned this year’s winner of the 2022 City of Adelaide Prize, with ARM Architecture’s redevelopment of the Adelaide Railway Station Entry beating a field of nine finalists to take home the prestigious award.

The prize was established by Council in 1997 to recognise and award a project that enhances the public experience of the City of Adelaide……

The winner of the City of Adelaide Prize and the People’s Choice Award was announced at the annual South Australian Architecture Awards Online streaming event (on Thursday 16th June 2022).

Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said the City of Adelaide Prize recognised innovative and creative projects that bring our city to life.

“The City of Adelaide Prize is about supporting the creation of extraordinary public spaces that engage the community and bring the streets of Adelaide alive,” said the Lord Mayor.

“Adelaide is a city designed for life and all the finalists in this category have made significant contributions to our city’s aesthetic and experience.”

“The new Adelaide Railway Station entry is both visually beautiful and extremely functional in helping large crowds of people enjoy their time in our city.”
