Gold Coast Mayor unveils scale model of proposed HOTA Lyric Theatre
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has unveiled a physical scale model of the proposed HOTA Lyric Theatre, designed by ARM Architecture.
The theatre will be a centrepiece of the ARM-designed HOTA (Home of the Arts) precinct, integrating with existing venues while introducing cutting-edge facilities. The design includes an 1800-seat main auditorium, a smaller 400-seat ‘techno box’ for experimental performances, plus function rooms, VIP experiences, rehearsal spaces and a variety of food and beverage offers.
“ARM is known for pushing the boundaries of theatre design,” said Aaron Poupard, Principal and Queensland Lead at ARM Architecture. “Our vision for the Gold Coast Lyric Theatre is to create a destination that enhances the city’s cultural vibrancy and sets a new standard for immersive audience experiences. The Gold Coast is an international city and deserves cultural assets that are world-class.”
“ARM has been integral to HOTA’s evolution since we won the international design competition to design its masterplan in 2013,” said ARM Director Jesse Judd.
“Our masterplan envisioned a dynamic cultural precinct, and we’ve since realised key projects like the in 2017, the Outdoor StageGreen Bridge in 2020, and the HOTA Gallery in 2021. Each development reflects our commitment to creating spaces that inspire and engage the Gold Coast community.”
Mayor Tate emphasised the theatre’s importance in shaping the city’s artistic future. “A city without arts and culture is a city without a soul. The Gold Coast is a wonderful city, and this theatre will allow future generations of creatives to embrace the arts at a world-class level,” he said.
ARM’s theatre design prioritises both functionality and architectural impact. The venue’s location within HOTA parklands will reinforce the precinct’s status as the city’s cultural hub, providing a home for major productions and international performances. The theatre is also being touted as a potential venue for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics.
With construction estimated to begin within 18 months, ARM is excited to bring this vision to life, creating a landmark venue that will redefine Gold Coast’s arts and entertainment landscape for decades to come.
